Millions of people type sensitive information into ChatGPT every day โ business strategies, personal problems, confidential documents. But is it actually safe? What does OpenAI do with your conversations?
Here's what we know from OpenAI's actual privacy policy, independent research, and what you can do to protect yourself.
ChatGPT is not end-to-end encrypted. OpenAI can read your conversations. By default, they may use them to train future models. For sensitive business or personal information, you should opt out of data training or use a more private alternative.
OpenAI stores your chat history on their servers. By default, these conversations can be reviewed by OpenAI employees for safety monitoring and may be used to train future AI models. This applies to both free and Plus users.
OpenAI collects your email, IP address, browser type, and usage patterns. This is standard for web services but worth knowing if you share a device or use shared networks.
OpenAI lets you turn off training data usage in Settings โ Data Controls โ "Improve the model for everyone." When disabled, your conversations are not used to train future models. This is available on all plans.
You can delete individual conversations or your entire chat history at any time. OpenAI retains deleted conversations for 30 days before permanent deletion for safety review purposes.
ChatGPT Enterprise and API users (businesses) have stronger privacy protections by default โ conversations are not used for training and have stricter data handling policies. If your company uses ChatGPT for work, ask your IT team which tier you're on.

Settings โ Data Controls โ Disable "Improve the model for everyone." Takes 30 seconds and prevents your chats from being used for training.
No passwords, financial account numbers, social security numbers, or confidential client information. Treat ChatGPT like a public forum for sensitive data.
ChatGPT's "Temporary Chat" mode doesn't save conversations or use them for training. Good for sensitive discussions you don't want stored.
Remove names, addresses, and identifying information before uploading documents to any AI. Replace with placeholders like [CLIENT NAME] or [COMPANY].
Stronger privacy protections, data retention controls, and no model training by default. Required for handling client or employee data professionally.
ChatGPT is safe for general use โ writing, research, brainstorming, and everyday tasks. It's not the right tool for highly sensitive information unless you're on the Enterprise plan.
The biggest risk isn't hacking โ it's forgetting that your conversations are stored and potentially reviewed. Use the opt-out settings, don't share confidential information, and you'll be fine for 95% of use cases.
